Redesign of the Chicago Sun-Times’ newspaper box. The current branding had been around for almost 10 years, yet the newspaper boxes around Chicago hadn’t been updated from the past brand program until late 2012. That previous branding featured the color blue: the defining color used by the Sun-Times’ rival paper. I was tasked with coming up with several different design ideas for the updated box. A handful were chosen for evaluation and the design on this page was ultimately selected to be produced. All along I felt this would be the strongest design. It would would stand out from that other paper’s color scheme, as well as that same paper’s free daily commuter paper whose newspaper boxes are solid red. By adding white to the top and bottom of the brick red newspaper box and combining that colorway with large, bold graphics, the new Sun-Times’ box stands on the street corners of Chicago.
